International Radio Festival :: Zurich

For ten days in June, the International Radio Festival celebrated for the second time the very best in international music radio programming, bringing together over 30 ground breaking radio stations from around the world, presenting more than 50 unique music radio shows live on-air, and broadcasting such shows to a worldwide audience, allowing listeners, and visitors to the festival, the chance to “Listen to how the world sounds”.

This year the festival celebrated the United Kingdom as its guest country, and offered global listeners the opportunity to enjoy a variety of British music radio shows by main players such as the British Council’s Selector, NME Radio, Kerrang Radio, and Kiss FM, as well as community stations such as Birmingham’s New Style Radio. Topping it all off, seven radio legends, including Tony Blackburn, Ed Stewart, the Emperor Rosko, Paul Burnett, Larry Tremaine, Mark Wesley and Tony Prince brought back memories of the early pirate radio broadcasters, who “liberated” Europe with musical youth culture. This year’s Festival also saw the staging of the first International Radio Festival ON AIR Awards, covering three categories, whose winners were:

Best Swiss Radio Show goes to Yves Banc’s Planete Bleue radio show.

Best International Radio Show goes to Karen Pearson at Folded Wing for the British Council’s “The Selector”

The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Tony Blackburn, Mark Wesley, Paul Burnett, Ed “Stewpot” Stewart, The Emperor Rosko, Larry Tremaine & Tony Prince Special “ON-AIR” Award Commendation goes to DJ Cleo, South Africa

The 3rd International Radio Festival takes place in Spring 2012. Stay tuned.

AOL. Artists

AOL recently launched AOL Artists — a site that extends their brand, built specifically for the artists they collaborate with. By collaborating with a selection of artists from around the world, they showcase work from a wide range of disciplines such as photographer, designers, illustrators and videographer. Each of them created a piece of their own, having only a white background as constraint.

Cloud City X Ft. Lone & Pariah

Athens International Radio, Athina 9,84FM and Black Athena present: Cloud City X – a night celebrating the legendary R&S imprint featuring special guests Lone (live/UK) & Pariah (DJ set/UK)

Thursday the 16th of June @ the Athina 9,84FM Amphitheatre

The 10th Cloud City (a series of concept parties Black Athena have been curating since the end of 2008), celebrates one of the most legendary record labels in dance music, who were founded back in 1984 in Ghent, releasing records by the likes of Model 500 and Aphex Twin, and who after a brief hiatus in the early noughties now finds itself in 2011, and having relocated to London, back at the forefront of the underground, spearheading the myriad imprints that are setting the standards in contemporary electronic music and staying true to their mission statement of only releasing innovative electronic music. To mark this occasion Cloud City X welcomes two current stars of the R&S Records roster for something a little bit different; with the support of Athens International Radio and Athina 9, 84 Cloud City X will take place in the Amphitheatre of 9, 84, and for the first time will be streamed live via AIR FM online, will be broadcast live via 9,84FM and will be video streamed simultaneously via Ustream. The event is also open to the public (both seated and standing) and is free of charge.

Lone:

Headlining on the night we welcome Lone, hailing from Nottingham in the UK and having recorded for Werk Discs, Hoya Hoya, R&S and his own Magic Wire imprint he is one of the hottest talents the UK has offered up in the past years and with heavy support from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson and Benji B, XFM’s Mary Anne Hobbs and too many Rinse FM DJs to mention he has already travelled the globe playing his unique brand of bass laden, synthetic, soulful dance music.

Pariah:

Also hailing from the UK, London’s Pariah has been making waves since dropping his debut ‘Detroit Falls’ for R&S back in 2010 – still only 22 years of age his joyfully melodic, sample heavy sound has seen him gather fans from UK centric scenes such as dubstep and garage as well as hip hop and house heads. Almost impossible to pigeon hole, his sound manages to reference the unquantized drums of prime Dilla while sitting comfortably next to contemporary future garage wunderkinds such as Falty DL, and indeed the more out their realms of classic Detroit Techno, while also name checking Boards of Canada, and Brian Eno as influences and looking to the likes of Thelma Houston vocal samples for some of his more ethereal works (the flipside of Detroit Falls – Orpheus).

As of 2011, Pariah has a number of releases planned, including a collaborative EP with a fellow producer. He has also begun work on his debut album which will come out at some point on R&S in the not too distant future.

On the evening local DJ support will come in the form of a DJ set from Athens’ own Petit Bear – one half of the Beatnicks duo and a DJ known for his eclectic take on music, as well as his ability to move seamlessly through genres, styles and tempos – his opening performance will definitely set the mood for the rest of the evening.
